Organizers of last fall’s inaugural GoSummit weren’t sure what to expect when they organized the event to help Southern Baptists of Texas Convention churches be more effective in evangelizing their friends and neighbors.
But when the doors opened at North Garland Baptist Fellowship, a healthy crowd began to trickle in. When the final attendance was tallied, 140 people representing 20 churches participated.
“It just exceeded our wildest expectations,” said Tony Mathews, SBTC’s Missional Ministries senior strategist. “This event was multicultural and the discussions were just so rich. It was really exciting.”
GoSummit speakers worked to break down many of the barriers that hinder personal evangelism. Session topics included how to overcome common hesitations people have when they hear the gospel and understanding the demographics and diverse cultures in Texas communities. A women’s session encouraged attendees to point other women to Jesus by looking for ways to engage them.
None of it could have happened without the Reach Texas State Missions Offering, which funded the event. 100% of giving through Reach Texas funds missions and evangelism initiatives through SBTC churches and ministries.
During GoSummit, attendees were challenged to take to heart the message of Romans 1, where Paul writes about his responsibility to bring the gospel to everyone around him: “I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish. … I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes ….”
“The gospel has never shamed us,” Mathews urged GoSummit attendees, “because it is the power of salvation for everyone who believes.”
