Disaster relief teams move from Deweyville to Houston flood victims

HOUSTON—Nearly 50 SBTC DR volunteers, including many who just finished work in Deweyville and Mauriceville where efforts recently concluded, deployed to Harris County in the wake of massive flooding following severe weather on April 18. The storm dumped an estimated 240 billion gallons of rain upon the Houston area, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said in an April 20 news conference.

SBTC mud-out operations are headquartered at Houston Northwest Baptist Church, disaster relief director Scottie Stice said. SBTC feeding operations are located at Humble Area’s First Baptist Church where SBTC volunteers are preparing 5,000 meals per day with food supplied by the American Red Cross. Parts of the feeding unit were slightly damaged in an April 26 storm that swept through the state, but teams expect all equipment back online within a couple days.

To meet the ever-increasing demand for volunteers, Champion Forest Baptist Church hosted an SBTC DR training event on Friday evening, April 22. More than 180 attended, Stice said, adding that additional DR training sessions will be held this week at First Baptist Church of Katy, Jersey Village Baptist Church, Northeast Houston Baptist Church in Humble, and Spring Baptist Church in Spring.
